sermonette: The Law of the Land
Obeying for the Sake of Conscience
David C. Grabbe
Given 19-Jun-04; Sermon #672s; 16 minutes
Description: (hide)
David Grabbe, focusing on Romans 13:1-5, gives specific reasons for obeying or being subject to civil authorities. Paul has revealed that by permitting these governments, God has ordained their authority. These governments have the authority to impose sanctions or penalties, and even though we may be ambassadors of a Heavenly Kingdom, we do not have diplomatic immunity. We should only rely on our conscience if it has been educated to God's standards of righteousness. We need to be careful that our driving behavior does not show an incremental relaxing of conscience. If we cut corners with the laws of man (suppressing or overriding our internal alarm system), we will do the same with the laws of God. We must educate our conscience by studying, meditating, or praying- but most importantly putting these righteous Godly behaviors into practice and purging our conscience from defilement.
