sermonette: Our Challenge / Our Calling
We Have To Continue In Growth
Mark S. Baker
Given 25-Jun-05; Sermon #726s; 13 minutes
Description: (hide)
Mark Baker, reflecting upon the unusual conditions surrounding the courtship of Mary and Joseph, namely Mary's conception by the Holy Spirit, and the obligation of Joseph to be the surrogate father, suggests that the challenges to us as called out members of God's Church are similar. We have, conceived by God's Holy Spirit in our own minds, a future member of God's family. Like Mary and Joseph, we have the obligation to rear, nurture, and teach this emergent spirit being growing within us. We are obligated to reign in our human nature, controlling its inordinate drives and lusts. We need to nurture the spiritual embryo forming within us by reading scripture and meditating, following the example of our Elder Brother. We need to exercise periodic self-correction and accept reproof. If we allow ourselves to be guided and corrected by God's word, we can overcome our human nature and prepare for our place in God's family.
