sermonette: God's Jealousy

The First and Second Commandments
David C. Grabbe
Given 02-Jul-05; Sermon #727s; 16 minutes

Description: (hide)

David Grabbe reflects that ancient Israel and Judah had a perennial problem with breaking the first and second commandments, idolatry, provoking God to jealousy. The term jealous, generally having a negative connotation, is nevertheless one of God's names. Jealousy ,in Godly parlance, refers to protective zeal for His own property. God has protective zeal against anything that would separate His people from Him, or endanger their spiritual lives. God will not tolerate the worship of other gods or worshipping Him in an improper way. God is working for much more than just "getting us saved," but in creating beings in His image and character. Idolatry automatically destroys this process and provokes God's zealous anger, causing separation and scattering until the idolatry permanently ceases. We need to be cautious that we do not incur God's anger and inevitable scattering by worshipping Him in forms and patterns He has not commanded.
