sermonette: How Do You 'Work Out' Your Salvation?

Man and God Working Together
David C. Grabbe
Given 18-Feb-06; Sermon #760s; 17 minutes

Description: (hide)

David Grabbe, focusing upon Philippians 2:12 admonishing that we work out our salvation with fear and trembling, uses the weight trainer/weight lifter analogy. In an athletic workout such as weight-lifting, daily exercises break down muscle tissues in order that they repair themselves with more strength. The weight trainer incrementally adds weights so that the weight lifter is able to add strength. The trainer, acting as a spotter, allows the lifter to push to his maximum ability, but takes up the slack when the lifter has reached his maximum capacity. The trainer encourages the lifter by supplying the maximum weight and taking over when he has reached his limit. The trainer’s goal is that the lifter may increase strength by incrementally pushing against the maximum weight he can tolerate. As our spiritual weight trainer, God is the author and finisher of salvation, giving us the will and the power to accomplish or complete our salvation.
