special: Passover Service 2005

John W. Ritenbaugh
Given 22-Apr-05; Sermon #PS2005; 80 minutes

Description: (hide)

On this 1974th anniversary of Christ's death, John Ritenbaugh suggests that prejudice may have been the dominant reason for Jesus' beating and crucifixion. In the time of Jesus, the Jews had a hatred for anything out of Nazareth, part of Samaria. Prejudice, having its root in supercilious pride, makes us leap to conclusions. Conversely, God, while we still hated Him, sent His Son to die for us. In this typical Passover service, the appropriate scriptures are read for the foot-washing , signifying the humility we are to have as we participate in this solemn service, the partaking of the broken bread, symbolizing Christ's broken body, and the partaking of the wine, symbolizing Christ's shed blood for our sins. Jesus' intimate final words with His disciples, including the promise of the Comforter, the admonishment to bear spiritual fruit, the commandment to love one another and to endure persecution, are read following the partaking of the wine. The real Lord's Prayer precedes the hymn Christ and His disciples sang before going into the Mount of Olives.
