sermonette: The Divine Principle of Assimilation
Citizenship Comes with Obligations
Richard T. Ritenbaugh
Given 30-Jun-07; Sermon #836s; 15 minutes
Description: (hide)
Richard Ritenbaugh, reflecting on the failed Immigration (Amnesty) Bill which would have instantly granted legal status to 18-20 million illegals, reminds us that the legitimate immigrants came to this country for religious and political freedom, willing to assimilate into a big melting pot with a common language and a common culture. The melting pot analogy has been replaced with a salad bowl analogy in which the newcomers refuse to assimilate, but cling to their own alien cultures and languages, while taking advantage of the "free" social services of the host country. In the past, Israel has used various stratagems of accommodating aliens, including having them undergo circumcision, a token of their willingness to obey the laws of Israel. Unassimilated aliens, illegals, or "guest workers" for that matter, will not be permitted in God's Kingdom. We need to go through rigorous assimilation rites of passage in order to become naturalized citizens.
