commentary: Executive Orders

John W. Ritenbaugh
Given 31-May-08; Sermon #884c; 15 minutes

Description: (hide)

John Ritenbaugh emphasizes the danger of Presidential executive orders chipping away individual liberties. In 1999, Bill Clinton placed us into war in Kosovo simply by invoking executive orders. Without an act of congress, President Bush signed into being the Office of Homeland Security, overseen by no one. In a national disaster, the President can declare martial law and suspend the law of habeas corpus. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, for example, suspended the rights of 20,000 Japanese Americans imprisoning them in concentration camps. Bill Clinton and Janet Reno, without cause, snuffed out the rights of a religious compound in Waco, Texas. Today, property rights can become null and void instantly through the law of eminent domain. In the wake of this erosion of liberties, we are incrementally heading toward a dictatorial or totalitarian regime.
