Clyde Finklea, reflecting on the meaning of Yom Teruah (the Day of the blowing of trumpets), suggests that this day calls for a time of repentance and self-examination, ten days of Av, in preparation for the Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement. Trumpets is a tipping point, fulcrum, or halfway between the Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles, (mirroring the fourth day of the Creation week in which God created the sun) admonishing us to remember the light of Christ which saved us from the murkiness of the world as well as our sobering responsibility to overcome and develop character before it is too late. Peter reminds us that we have been freed from our sins, given the power to overcome, and warns us to make every effort to make our calling sure. The parable of the wise and foolish virgins reminds us that many are called, but few are chosen. Everyone that God has called to Christ has the same opportunity to be sanctified and glorified, but there is effort required. This solemn feast day is a kind of final reminder to be prepared. Will we face atonement or judgment?
