John Ritenbaugh, continuing on the subject of preparing for God's priesthood, suggests that after Abraham's encounter with Melchizedek, the head of each family, perhaps the first born sons, served as priests of the family. Because of the dedication of the firstborn, God owns them. The leadership responsibilities for their families continued even after God claimed the Levites rather than all the firstborn for temple service. The firstborn privileges indicate eminence and prominence, carrying the birthright promises. In the New Testament, the firstborn did not always correspond to actual birth order. Firstborn has become a title of prominence. As first fruits, the body of Christ, the Israel of God, and co-heirs with Christ, we will be His co-priests. The word priest is a modification of presbyter or elder. A priest, Cohen, or pontiff, serves as a bridge between God and man performing mediatory duties. The covenant people have been reserved as a nation of priests, confirmed in holiness.
