An article written by oceanographer Lord Stirling suggests that the BP oil spill may have broken up the Gulf Stream due to massive amounts of oil sinking to the bottom of the Gulf, disrupting the flow of warm water flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. It has, in effect, caused the Gulf stream, one of the world's biggest weather determiners—a moderating influence between cold and hot—to begin to disappear. Since the explosion of the well-head, Europe has suffered some drastic weather changes. If this is beginning to happen, we may see what has caused the ice ages in the past. As long as the oil remains in those large pools, we may be in for drastic weather changes for years to come. Some wonder whether the gulf stream will ever be able to collect itself, getting back to normal, moderating the weather as it had before.
