Description: (hide)

Richard Ritenbaugh, focusing on the United States Marine Corps’ motto Semper Fidelis (always faithful), suggests, that to a member of the Marines, it means much more than that. To a Marine, and by extension, to soldiers in God’s Army, Semper Fidelis refers to a way of life. The use of Latin gives the phrase honor, respectability, and legitimization. The motto semper fi shapes and determines the character of the Marine. It is not negotiable; it is not relative, but absolute. God’s character is always faithful; if we mimic God’s character, we will be always faithful. This trait we need to be able to translate into practical day-to-day behaviors, as a foundational part of our character. God’s word is faithful, dependable, true, trustworthy, and absolutely believable, purified or refined seven times. As Paul assured the Corinthians and Thessalonians, God will complete His work in us, making us one of His first fruits. We should take Semper Fidelis as our own motto. Moses, in the Song of Moses, emphasizes faithfulness, justice, and righteousness. These characteristics are demonstrated in God’s creation all around us, covering the entire universe. God demonstrated His faithfulness in His covenants with Abraham and David, and will be faithful in His covenant with the Israel of God. There is no reason to fear as long as we keep our eyes on God. We can extrapolate that if God was faithful in all His previous covenants, He will be faithful in His covenant with us as well. Only if we are faithful to Him will we come to know Him, and have His character a part of us. We must faithfully experience life with Him in order to learn, overcome, and mature into Godly children. We need to thoroughly immerse ourselves in God’s character trait of faithfulness.
