Paul's final voyage to Rome, described in Acts 27, was made in treacherous wintry weather, when the crew literally lost control of the ship for nearly 14 days, losing all hope. Paul's message of hope saved the lives of all the passengers when everyone else was losing their connection to reason. When we go through hopeless trails, it would be well to "stay in the ship," trusting God to bring control back to our lives. God may desire to test the staying power of our conversion and the depth of our trust in Him. Paul successfully endured the trial of his faith, taking his suffering in stride. We need to emulate his example in the casting away of all impediments that threaten our eternal life; nothing is worth the sacrifice of our eternal life. In the middle of trials and tests it is difficult to navigate, making it necessary to place absolute trust in God to bring us through. As we are spared, we need to provide encouragement to others. The trials that we go through are for our ultimate good as long as we maintain our contact with God. We need to hold fast and stay in the ship.
