Character is determined by responses to tests, as can be seen by Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac, Daniel's obedience to God in the threat of the lions' den, Ruth's loyalty to her mother-in-law, and Esther's loyalty to her nation. Testing is central to the development of character. All of life, from controversial encounters to mundane tasks, could be considered tests of character. Our spiritual identity is dependent on our responses to tests. One test paradox that we are called upon to learn is that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Jesus gave all for the sake of mankind with the desire that we reciprocate this love to our fellow man, emulating His example of sacrifice. Cheerfully giving is one way of passing a test of character.
