The law as tutor (Galatians 3:24-25) does not mean God's spiritual law has been abolished. Paul uses law and covenant synonymously, so the tutor is the entire Old Covenant, not merely the ceremonial law. That covenant was added to the Abrahamic promise because of transgressions. Israel had lived in Egypt, forgotten God's laws, and absorbed pagan culture, so God called them out and taught them again. He wrote the Ten Commandments on stone and the statutes in a book, and He gave rituals, circumcision, and sacrifices that set Israel apart and kept them aware of their need for a Savior. The word tutor literally means "child-leader" and is better rendered guardian or custodian. This guardian put a hedge around Israel, keeping them pure and separate from the pagan world until Christ came. It was temporary and could never give eternal life, which comes by faith through the promise to Abraham. Once faith has come, Israel no longer needs a guardian. The regulations that isolated Israel from the Gentiles and bred hostility between Jew and Gentile have passed away, and all who are in Christ are sons of God and heirs of the promise. What ended is the Old Covenant's separating system, not God's laws, which have been in force since Creation and still are. With the Holy Spirit, believers keep them in their spiritual intent.

The law serves as a schoolmaster that brings people to Christ. If the law were abolished then the schoolmaster that brings people to Christ would be taken away. The law was not abolished or changed. The law defines sin and tells what it is. The law shows serious deviations from the way of righteousness and how far short people come of God's glory. The law is sent in order to show that people cannot be saved by works and to shut them up to be saved by grace. The law is fulfilled in Christ and by faith people receive the fruit of it and are able to fulfill it. The aim or end of the law is to enable people to become like Christ. Regeneration is a work by which the law is fulfilled. When a person is born from above a new nature is placed in him which loves the law of God and is perfectly conformed to it. The law will admit no one into God's kingdom until he is perfectly conformed to it. Every believer will be in that perfect condition at his resurrection to eternal life.
