Sabbathkeeping (Part 4)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe Sabbath holds a universal significance as it was made for mankind, not solely for the Jews, to serve God's purpose for all humanity. God designated the Sabbath as the sign between Him and His people, marking Him as the Creator and those who keep it as His children. It is not merely the observance of the day that constitutes this sign, but also the manner in which it is observed, reflecting a relationship with Him. The commandment in Exodus 20 establishes the Sabbath as holy, belonging to God, and a time set aside for His worship and service, with no indication that it is merely ceremonial. Deuteronomy 5 expands this understanding, linking the Sabbath not only to creation but also to redemption, portraying God as both Creator and Savior, emphasizing liberty and the preservation of a relationship with the Redeemer. God expects the Sabbath to be held honorable, a day of joy and delight, distinct from other days, to be used for His pleasure rather than personal desires or ordinary activities. The emphasis lies not on the energy expended on the Sabbath, but on the purpose and intent behind the actions taken during His holy time.
