Throughout Scripture, the names of personages and places have proved significant in identifying characteristics or traits of those so named. The archangels Michael, meaning "Who is Like God?" (exacting the reply - no one!), Gabriel, "Man of God, "a messenger to Daniel, and Helel "praise of God," sadly turned to praise of self, becoming Satan or adversary. The names of the seven churches of Revelation 2-3 prove equally significant as demonstrating the traits or characteristics of the wise virgins, representing the Bride of Jesus Christ. Ephesus means "desire," representing the desire Christ has toward His Bride and the desire the Bride has toward the Bridegroom (Song of Solomon 2:16). Smyrna means "myrrh," representing an essence that grows sweeter as it is crushed (similar to experiencing trials). Pergamos means "marriage," signifying the marriage of the Lamb (Revelation 10:7-9) when Christ and the Church will be married. Thyatira represents continual sacrifice, representing the lifetime sacrifice God's called-out ones, the Bride of Christ, are required to make (Romans 12:1). Sardis means "remnant," indicating the narrow gate the saints are to follow (Matthew 7:13). Philadelphia means "brotherly love," indicating that God's saints are to love one another as Christ has loved us (John 3:34). Laodicea means "Place of people of Common fairness," promising overcomers the opportunity to sit next to the throne of Christ. All seven names describe aspects of the Bride of Christ, the wise Virgins who have overcome, ready to enter the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
