In Ecclesiastes 3:11, we learn that God has implanted a sense of eternity (a sense of divine purpose) in the human heart, but only those to whom God has given His John 6:44 calling, who currently function as stewards of His mysteries, have a glimpse of this purpose (I Corinthians 2:7-16). On the Day of Atonement, we use our spiritual tool of fasting to bring our heart into alignment with Almighty God (James 4:8). The very best offering we can present to God is a humble and contrite heart, put on the fast track through fasting. Because we realize the material world around us is temporary, we must orient ourselves to eternal values. The time, treasure, and talent bestowed upon us are fleeting and temporary, requiring that we use them in God's service while we still have them. The Old Testament sacrifices were the same types of sacrifice of a broken heart, repentance, and changed lives that God demands now. Christ's sacrifice eliminated the need for sacrifices, but not the need for sacrificing. We cannot do the will of God without sacrificing. We must give ourselves exclusively to the will of Almighty God, offering our lives as living sacrifices of reasonable service, praise, and thanksgiving, reaping eternal rather than temporal rewards.
