As we age, we feel an uncomfortable urgency about how little we have accomplished in our lives, especially concerning God's purpose for us, producing a kind of panic experienced by the foolish virgins in Matthew 25. As God's called-out saints, we need to be cognizant of the importance of self-control and self-discipline, the ninth fruit of God's Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22), but by no means the least. Proverbs 6:6 directs us to consider the ant when we reflect on time management, for poor time management will wreak havoc on our spiritual growth. Self-control helps us to restrict or restrain ourselves from harmful lusts of the flesh, including gluttony, intoxication, sex outside of marriage, and drug abuse. The nine fruits of the Spirit constitute one package, all of which must be coupled with our will to strive for them, setting proper daily habits to attain them (Proverbs 4:7). Notice that we have never seen an ant without self-control, or one that was over-eating, over-drinking, or unmotivated in getting its work done.
