An outsider to Christianity may oversimplify "the Way" as an attempt to slavishly or mechanistically follow a set of standards or laws. As important as law keeping is, it does not fully encapsulate the entire process of developing godly character. Only those called by God can develop the cardinal virtues of prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude, coupled with the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity, making up a composite picture of godly character. Prudence is seen throughout the book of Proverbs as dwelling with wisdom. A synonym for prudence may be common sense. Solomon may have compromised his gift of wisdom by not exercising common sense or godly prudence. Without prudence, one is unable to use or process wisdom. Prudence is enhanced by the spiritual tools of prayer, meditation, and study. If we use prudence in all our decisions, we will grow spiritually. Like our forefather Abraham, we must think through the conclusion of every decision God compels us to make. Although prudence is not revealed knowledge, it will help us grow spiritually when revealed knowledge is presented to us.
