In the event of Achan's execution, Ezekiel 18:20 seems to exempt Achan's family from the curse. The breaking of the ban (taking the spoils of war which had been dedicated to God) by one person doomed the entire tribe of Israel. The secret sin of one individual brings down the entire congregation or community. When Achan heard what had happened, he should have been shaking in his boots and seeking repentance, but he did not. Achan's children were adults, not minors, and would not have been innocent victims. The dire consequences of this ban were understood by the entire community. Achan's children, in the estimation of the Keil-Deilisch Commentary, were complicit in this presumptuous act and summarily executed. We must remember to pay our vows to Almighty God, remembering God's grace in sparing us from similar presumptuous acts we have previously committed.
