Jesus Christ is the host of the Passover, a somber time when we renew our covenant with God. Our focus should be on Christ, who He was and who He is now. Passover is the communal event of the family of God, a memorial of Christ's last meal with His disciples. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us; Jesus gave His life for those who were His enemies. His resurrection proved that everything He said was true. Christ's death was one of a kind, the death of a sinless person, the death of God in the flesh. Not discerning the Lord's body in a careless manner is dangerous. This sacrifice was done personally for each and every one of us, creating in us a sense of obligation, submitting to Him in sacrifice. The Passover is a simple, but deeply meaningful ritual, both extremely somber and extremely joyous. As Christ's called-out ones, we are obligated to wash one another's feet as a symbol of humility demanded in Christ's disciples. The breaking of bread symbolizes the stripes Christ endured for our healing. The wine symbolizes Christ's blood which redeems us and reconciles us to God the Father as the penalty of our sins is paid in full. In the moving prayer Jesus makes in John 17, He asks for the protection of His disciples, then and now, from the temptations and persecution of the world. After the disciples sang a hymn, they departed into the Mount of Olives.
