We must not become insensitive to the feelings of those around us. Blushing, an involuntary response, occurs when we experience shame, prompted by the nervous system's releasing of adrenaline into the bloodstream. Almighty God placed this proclivity into us as a kind of monitor or signal that modesty has been breached. Through a hardening of attitudes and a blunting of the boundary between right and wrong, we can lose the capability to blush at sin. Both Ezra and Jeremiah realized that the years in captivity had blunted the sense of shame in their people. We have the same warning given to us today. We cannot drift away from our relationship with God or each other. In his novel, The Time Machine, H. G. Wells illustrated that the people had totally lost their sense of social sensitivity. We need to examine the state of our relationship with God and with one another, showing sensitivity for one another. We must make sure we never lose our ability to blush, a sure indication that we are sensitive to sin's toxic effects.
