Mercy is an important dimension of God's character, displayed by our compassion on and forgiveness of those over whom we have power. Martin Luther suggested that mercy is perhaps the first work of God. The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant teaches the importance of mercy, where, an individual whose creditor had forgiven his $10 million debt refused to forgive the $20 debt of his debtor. We, always remembering the debt Christ has paid for our sins, are to pay forward in mercy toward those who owe us much less. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, we learn that, unless we act on our compassion, our concern is worthless. We can envision ourselves as the one beaten, robbed and left to die, but ministered to by Jesus Christ. When Joseph kindly dealt with his uncompassionate brothers, he factored in the insight that God had planned this whole episode in advance for the eventual deliverance of the family of Jacob. Ephesians 2:1-2 teaches us the incredible scope of God's mercy; we learn in Psalm 136 that God's mercy endures forever. Mercy is a trait that we as God's called-out ones must strive to emulate.
