Debt has been a thorn in the side of America since her founding. Today, it is hopelessly out of control. Today's national debt of $22 trillion could be erased only through a contribution of $64,000 by each man, woman and child in America. As well, private debt is equally as horrendous, with credit card debt per person standing at $9,000; the combined debt from student loans stands at $1.5 trillion dollars. As staggering as these figures are, the debt each of us we have incurred from our sins pales this financial debt into insignificance. Because all people have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), we must all emulate the gratitude displayed by the woman who sacrificed the expensive alabaster bottle of fragrance for Christ. The magnanimity of Our Heavenly Father and Our Redeemer Jesus Christ to completely wipe out our debt must inspire us to forgive trespasses committed against us. Forgiving others is part of the living sacrifice demanded of us (Romans 12:1-2).
