In 1936, British King Edward VIII abdicated for the woman he loved. He was not the first or the last to cast off the responsibilities of rulership. Edward, at a mere 42 years of age, abdicated when he should have led. In similar fashion, Satan's pride and Adonijah's presumptuousness urged them to leave their ordained positions as they attempted to usurp rulership not granted to them. As God's called-out ones, we must consider that God is grooming us for responsibility in a royal priesthood (I Peter 2:9-10). We dare not emulate Esau, who despised his birthright for a bowl of stew, handing his inheritance over to his brother in mere minutes. Ananias and Sapphira gave up their lives when they tested God by being selfish and not giving all of the money they had made in selling their land. Jesus, on the other hand, refused the temptations of hunger, position, and power, discarding anything that interfered with His responsibility to carry out the work His Father had given Him. As aspiring kings and priests, we must also run our races in a way that we may obtain our crown, never ducking the work God has called us to do.
