Divine Warning

Article by John W. Ritenbaugh

It is evident that the attack serves as a warning of God's displeasure with us, yet national leaders and commentary focus solely on our innocence, ignoring the multitude of sins Americans commit daily. There is a refusal to acknowledge personal responsibility, as if individual actions do not impact the whole of society, dismissing the principle that what one sows, one shall also reap. When a public figure suggested we should ask God what we have done to deserve such calamity, he faced harsh criticism for perceived judgment, leading him to regret his words. This rejection of truth mirrors the proud path of ancient Israel, where the attitude prevails that there is nothing wrong with oneself, only with others, casting oneself as an innocent victim. Such an attitude ensures no change, and disasters will only increase in frequency and intensity. As with Amos, warnings of guilt are met with revulsion and castigation, happening at a time when the power of the holy people is shattered due to our own sins. Any warning to the people of this land will not come by our own power or might, but must be by God's Spirit. It is a wake-up call to the church to sigh and cry for the abominations of this land, to seek God's guidance toward repentance, to love Him and our neighbor, and to raise up a witness before the Israelitish peoples. We must also ask God to guide the leadership of this nation, to be merciful, patient, forgiving, and to teach them what they must do for His name's sake.

Divine Warning

Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh

In the spirit of Amos, it is evident that warnings of God's displeasure are often met with rejection, just as they were in ancient Israel. The nation, in its pride, refuses to acknowledge any guilt, insisting on its innocence and viewing itself as an innocent victim, while ignoring the multitude of sins committed by all. This attitude of denial ensures no change will occur, and disasters will only increase in frequency and intensity over time. Like Israel of old, carnal people resist spiritual truths, showing no gratitude for the warnings delivered by God's true prophets. Humility is so distant that the reality of sin and its impact on life remains incomprehensible to many. Despite public prayers and services, there is a profound disconnect from truly knowing God, leaving many unaware of what they should repent of. Yet, God will hear us, for He loves us and has appointed us to a priestly responsibility. We must not fail to use this privilege, seeking His guidance to repentance, to love Him and our neighbor, and to raise up a witness before His people. We must also beseech Him to guide the leadership of this nation, to be merciful, patient, forgiving, and to teach them what they must do for His name's sake.
