While certain kinds of questions about the Bible may pique our curiosity, they may be altogether pointless, non-essential for salvation, and may waste our precious time or lead us into outright apostasy. Speculations about Christ in John 7 reveal ignorance, narrow prejudices, and biases focused upon minor details - all missing the main point. This concentrating upon twigs led to irrationality and eventually murder. John points out that if the curious crowds had indeed practiced the doctrines of Moses they claimed to profess, they would have known Christ and believed His message. Those who followed and practiced these doctrines did believe Christ, were convinced by His signs, and accepted Him. Non-essential issues may cause the demise of an entire congregation. In our Bible studies, instead of grasping at non-essential twigs, we need to be hugging the trunk of the tree.
