Our Walk Out of Darkness Into the Light
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsWalking in darkness represents a life of sin, a state of separation from God, where one lives contrary to His commandments and light. It is the condition of those who profess fellowship with the Father and Jesus Christ yet continue in a way of sin, revealing a lie in their claim to be Christians. Such a person does not have true fellowship with Christ, for God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. To walk in darkness is to live without regard for God's holiness, often oblivious to His will, blinded by an outlook opposed to His desire and perfection. This darkness is akin to a citizenship in a kingdom of sin and evil, an environment driven by pride and perversion under the dominion of satan. It stands in direct contrast to the Kingdom of God, which is a kingdom of light and holiness. All are born into this dominion of darkness, inclined to think and live in its ways unless transformed by God's Holy Spirit. Walking in darkness means rarely thinking of God, or if one does, not seeing Him as the pure light He is, but as a lenient figure who overlooks willful transgressions. During the Days of Unleavened Bread, God's people are reminded to come out of this darkness, just as the Israelites came out of Egypt, a symbol of sin, into the light. This period emphasizes the struggle against sin, the powers of darkness, human nature, and the world. To walk in the light is to obey God's commandments continuously, fostering fellowship with Him and with one another, allowing the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, to cleanse from all sin. Conversely, persisting in darkness, living in sin repeatedly without repentance, severs this fellowship, for light and darkness cannot coexist. True Christians must recognize their sinful nature, repent, and strive to walk in the light, relying on God's help to overcome the darkness that seeks to dominate.
