The Fear of God

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

The fear of God is a vital motivation for living a life that aligns with His will. It is not merely a soft reverence or respect, but encompasses a profound dread and terror of His power and judgment, as intended by Him to shape our understanding. This fear is the beginning of knowledge, as stated in Proverbs 1:7, and serves as a fundamental prerequisite for true wisdom and understanding that lead to eternal life. It compels us to react, to take God into account in every aspect of our lives, and to make choices that reflect His way, thereby avoiding the consequences of sin, such as the Lake of Fire. This fear motivates strenuous effort to escape judgment, as Jesus Christ Himself instructs in Matthew 10 to fear Him who can destroy both body and soul in hell. It drives us to turn away from sin and toward God as a sanctuary, a place of safety for those who dread Him. Unlike natural fears that come instinctively, the fear of God must be learned and instilled by Him as a gift, compelling submission and reaction to His power, holiness, and justice, which the world does not recognize. The fear of God is the essence of true religion, causing us to hate evil, pride, and arrogance, and to depart from sin, as defined in Proverbs. It is a moral force that leads to godly living, ensuring that we do not treat His judgment lightly or show contempt through our conduct. As warned in Hebrews, God will judge His people, and this fear reminds us of the fiery judgment from which His grace saves us, urging us not to be complacent about our calling. Ultimately, the fear of God puts all other fears into perspective, guiding us to wise and moral choices. It is the chief part of knowledge, without which understanding and wisdom cannot produce a life that pleases God. If we do not fear Him, we cannot grasp our place in His design or avoid the destructive consequences of sin, as seen in the world around us. Thus, fearing God is an essential element of godly character, crucial to the process of salvation, and the foundation for a life of clear direction and purpose.
