The 'Exceptional' 2007 Drought

'WorldWatch' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The American Southeast suffers under an exceptional drought, with dead cypress trees, withered lawns, and depleted streams, ponds, and lakes across Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Northern Georgia, at the heart of this crisis, sees 70 of its 159 counties classified as experiencing D4 drought conditions, marked by widespread crop and pasture losses and severe water shortages. Amos 4:6-8 portrays God withholding rain as a means to urge repentance, declaring, "I also withheld rain from you, when there were still three months to the harvest. I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city. One part was rained upon, and where it did not rain the part withered . . . yet you have not returned to Me, says the Lord." Despite a heritage of exposure to divine principles, modern nations descended from Israel, including America, have turned away from God's way, embracing secularism, greed, and self-indulgence. This exceptional drought across a vast region of the United States raises the question of whether the citizens will return to God or face even graver disasters ahead.

The Rain Comes Down

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the lands of the Bible, particularly Canaan, rain is a rare and vital occurrence, happening only during specified rainy seasons. God purposely placed His people in a naturally dry land, where they had to rely on Him for control of the weather, making the cycle of their lives an annual test of faith. Rain in due season became a sign of blessing from God, as seen in Deuteronomy 28:12, where the LORD promises to open His good treasure, the heavens, to give rain to the land in its season and bless the work of their hands. Conversely, when they turned from Him, the LORD would change the rain of their land to powder and dust, as a sign of destruction, according to Deuteronomy 28:24. Thus, to the Israelites, rain symbolized blessing, abundance, and life itself, directly correlating with God's favor. However, rain at the wrong time could be as harmful or useless as no rain at all, emphasizing the importance of rain falling in its proper season to germinate seeds and mature fruit.
