The Miracles of Jesus Christ: Exorcism in the Synagogue

Bible Study by Martin G. Collins

On a busy day for Jesus, He teaches in the synagogue and performs an exorcism, casting out a demon from a man (Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37). This event showcases His authority over unclean spirits, as the demon, recognizing Him as the Holy One of God, cries out in fear before being silenced. Jesus commands the demon to hold its peace and leave, issuing a direct order backed by God's authority, and the spirit obeys in rage and anguish. The people in the synagogue are amazed and fearful, struck by the power of His command, questioning what new doctrine this is and spreading the news of His extraordinary act. Unlike contemporary methods that rely on prayers or chants, Jesus does not cajole or request but authoritatively expels the demon, demonstrating the undeniable power of God's Word.

Satan and the Holy Days

Sermonette by Cody Ford

Jesus taught in the synagogue on the Sabbath when a man with an unclean spirit cried out in recognition of Him as the Holy One of God. Jesus rebuked the spirit and commanded it to come out. The spirit convulsed the man and cried out before departing. This event occurred during services and shows that satan is present on the Sabbath to disrupt spiritual activity rather than avoiding it. The example fits the pattern of heightened satanic opposition during times of focus on God and His holy days.
