Why Is Hope Delayed?

CGG Weekly by John W. Ritenbaugh

Even in the face of monumental global problems, we can hold onto hope, though it is not a physical refuge. In times when every culture seems to be breaking down and terror looms, the delay of God's promises can weigh heavily. Proverbs 13:12 reminds us that hope deferred makes the heart sick, and it is easy for a troubled spirit, wearied by mankind's violence and greed, to grow discouraged. Revelation 6:10 echoes this frustration, with saints crying out from their graves, asking how long until the Lord judges and avenges their blood. Yet, biblical hope is not a mere wish or fantasy; it is anchored in the unfailing character and power of Almighty God. As David counsels in Psalm 42:5, we must hope in God, for we shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance. This hope, both as an expectation of good and a steadfast attitude, is a necessity of Christian life, dispelling fears of frustration and despair. Even when God delays answering, as David experienced in Psalm 22:1-2, crying out in urgency yet persevering in trust, we must remember that God is not thoughtless or unaware. As Creator, He knows what each of us needs to fit into His purpose, and in His mercy, He prepares us for what lies ahead, even if it requires time. Our charge is to ensure our hope is firmly rooted in God and His promises, avoiding vain wishing. With this foundation, let hope arise within us to motivate the working out of our salvation, glorifying God through the unity of faith, hope, and love.
