In the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-6), the word transliterated echad means unity. The emphasis lies on a unified approach in the God family—Father, Son, and all God's children. Jesus' prayer in John 17 stresses unity in all of the character traits of the God family, including loving God with all our hearts and loving others as ourselves. Echad implies that the members of the God family have singleness of purpose, as taught by the concept of a circumcised heart, a singleness of heart, enabling us to walk in unity with our Elder Brother and Heavenly Father. Today, the entire world, including the Church of God, is under attack from Satan, who attempts to separate us from our Savior, coercing us to promote our own carnal nature and the pulls of the flesh instead of a wholesome, agape-filled relationship with our Creator. God's Holy Spirit, first distributed at Pentecost, enables us to walk in unity with our Maker, imitating His Godly character. If we do not remain in this spiritual union, we get pulled into a dangerous state of double-mindedness in which Satan's divisive spirit synthesizes with our aggressive and deceitful carnal nature. We must allow God's Holy Spirit to soften and transform our previously stony (that is, carnal) hearts so that we can be in unity with God.
