Life Doesn't Work on a Balance Sheet (Part Three)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

Death, in the biblical sense, extends beyond the mere cessation of physical existence. It often describes an inferior quality of life, a state where a person may be breathing and thinking, yet living in a manner unworthy of enduring beyond their allotted years. This inferior life, far removed from the God-life, emerged with sin, bringing a quality of existence vastly diminished compared to the divine standard. With sin and death came evil and suffering, the natural consequences of living contrary to God's way. Under God's purpose, it would not be fitting for such a corrupted, defiling life to extend into eternity, marking death as not just an end, but a diminished state of being from the moment sin entered the world.

Life in the Church

Sermon by David C. Grabbe

Death, as addressed in Christ's letter to Sardis, carries a symbolic meaning that includes an inferior quality of life. This poor quality of life results from unawareness of spiritual realities and separation from God, leading to an existence far removed from what God intends. Jesus declared that He came to give life abundantly, yet without this life, a person may experience much stimulation but not truly be alive. In I Peter 4:3-6, Peter describes the dead as those who engage in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and idolatries. The world may call this "living it up," but it is not true living, as these pursuits lack lasting value and lead only to decay and ruin. Such an enslaving and untenable walk is, in essence, death. In the context of Sardis, this inferior quality of life could manifest alongside activity, yet without the essence of God's intended life, reflecting a profound spiritual deficiency.

Gravity is but one of the many natural laws. These cause-and-effect principles operate continuously in our lives. We either comply, or we suffer the consequences.

God of the Living

Living by Faith: God's Grace (Part One)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Sometimes God's sense of justice seems unusual or strange to us, giving us many questions to ponder about fairness. Justice and fairness are not identical.

Sowing and Reaping

'Ready Answer' by David C. Grabbe

A basic agricultural principle, what is sown will be reaped, also applies to human behavior. Sin brings death, while following God's Word produces life.
