God's Sea of Glass (Part 1)

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

Solomon constructed a vast sea of cast bronze for the temple as part of its unmatched excellence in workmanship and materials. Huram of Tyre fashioned this circular basin, ten cubits across and five cubits high, with a circumference of thirty cubits and walls a handbreadth thick. Its brim resembled a lily blossom, and ornamental buds encircled it in two rows. The sea rested on twelve bronze oxen facing outward in groups of three toward each cardinal direction, and it held two thousand baths of water, or more than seventeen thousand gallons. Positioned on the southeast side of the temple court, it replaced the smaller laver of the tabernacle and supplied clean water for the ten movable bronze carts and lavers used to wash sacrifices and maintain ritual purity. Priests required this constant cleansing lest they approach God defiled. The original Hebrew term for the sea, yam, evokes the roar of breaking surf, yet the structure itself represented the forces of chaos brought under order by the Creator. Its calm, contained waters and gleaming bronze surface bore similarities to the sea of glass before God's throne, though the earthly version remained physical and temporary. This bronze sea underscored the requirement of both outward and inward holiness for those who would stand in God's presence, foreshadowing the crystal sea of eternal peace where the redeemed will worship without the turbulence that characterizes the wicked or the rebellious earthly sea.
