Isaac and Rebekah's son Jacob, aided by his mother, deceives his aged, nearly blind father by impersonating his brother Esau, thereby securing the firstborn blessing. When Esau returns and the ruse is exposed, Isaac trembles exceedingly yet retains his composure. He recognizes that the sovereign God permitted the deception and therefore intended the blessing for Jacob, as confirmed by the declaration that the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself.
