The Greatness of God's Power

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

True power, the ability to exercise authority effectively, belongs to God alone. His strength is the only true sovereignty, and no one possesses power unless He allows it. Jesus Christ shares this power, and members of God's church do as well. His power is evident in the creation and sustenance of the world, surpassing all forces within it, and is displayed in mighty acts of salvation. When God delegates His authority to human beings, it provides a certain power to care for and use the earth responsibly. Yet, He often intervenes with miraculous works, especially of deliverance, demonstrating His might. In the spiritual realm, Christ, having all authority from His Father, used it to forgive sins and cast out evil spirits, giving authority to His disciples to become sons of God and share in His work. The greatest show of His power of deliverance is in our individual calling and conversion to His truth and way of life. On the Day of Pentecost, the power of God's Spirit became operative in the life of the church, a power that continues to flow. The apostle Paul encouraged the church regarding the exceeding greatness of God's power, praying for the Ephesian members to know the power already working in them, assuring true Christians of confidence in God's promises. Paul emphasized that salvation is the result of God's power at work in us and through us, not something we achieve on our own. He stressed the immeasurable greatness of His power in us who believe, residing within us, dispelling fears and granting new confidence and assurance in salvation. This power, described as surpassing and beyond comprehension, is an energy that overcomes all resistance, a strength that conquers every obstacle, derived from the limitless might of God. Paul illustrated this might through the resurrection of Christ, showing that every hindrance and enemy, including death, is overcome by His power. This power transforms us, making us a new creation, not merely a remake, but a regenerated life through His mighty action. It imparts a new disposition, guiding our faculties in a different direction, affecting our hearts, minds, and will. We are made alive together with Christ, no longer dead in sin, but renewed daily by the Spirit of life in Him. This ongoing process, fueled by His power, molds and guides us, ensuring that nothing can prevent the fulfillment of His purpose in us. The resurrection of Christ stands as proof that no power, not even the strongest enemies, can withstand Him, guaranteeing that He will keep us and make us fit for the future glory.

Powers of Christ

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

As Christians, we often feel powerless in this age, unable to face the trials and powerful forces of this world. Yet, we have a direct link to the One who possesses all the power of the universe, for we are His children. God's power is limitless and inexhaustible, flowing from Him to us, providing what we need to live, overcome, and grow as His spiritual children. He promises to share His awesome power with us forever in His Kingdom, ensuring that His strength is real in our lives to guide us to where He desires us to be. Jesus Christ, as our Mediator and High Priest, channels this power from the Father to us, delivering all promised blessings and abilities. He holds all the power of the universe in His hand, assuring us not to doubt, for He fills us with that power and remains with us every step of the way. This limitless power, given by our wise and loving elder Brother who has walked before us, is doled out with perfect understanding of our needs, even before we ask. He stands ready to provide more when we require it, and less when we need less, infusing us with confidence and faith as our best ally, always willing to grant the power only He can give. Among His many powers, Jesus Christ commands nature with a mere word, calming storms and healing diseases, demonstrating that creation obeys its Creator. Whether facing storms, droughts, floods, or ailments, He has the power to solve these problems and bring us through safely. He also holds the power to cleanse us from sin, forgiving us and purifying us for the Kingdom of God, transforming us from spiritual decay into glorious beings, no matter how dirty we feel. Furthermore, Jesus Christ has the power to destroy the works of satan, having defeated him through His life, death, and resurrection, releasing us from bondage to evil and even death itself. As our High Priest, He continues to check and defeat satan at every turn on our behalf, proving Himself the Master over the devil's works. His power to teach and clarify reveals the full intent of God's law, showing us how to apply it through clear, unambiguous instruction and by living it Himself, offering us the understanding and wisdom we seek when we ask. Jesus Christ also sees into our hearts, discerning our strengths and weaknesses perfectly, providing the aid we need to overcome and grow into His rest. His power to do the impossible, such as walking on water, inspires us to attempt the seemingly unattainable, showing that with faith and His example, we can strive toward perfection and rule with Him in His Kingdom. These powers, and many others, are available to us as He sits at God's right hand, interceding for us and empowering us through the Holy Spirit to learn, overcome, and grow into His image.
