Psalm Genres (Part Three B): Messianic (continued)

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the Messianic psalms Jesus Christ appears as the ruling King who will exercise sovereign authority over the earth at His second coming. Psalm 110 records the Father's declaration that the Son should sit at His right hand until His enemies become His footstool. From Zion the Lord sends the rod of His strength, enabling Him to rule in the midst of His enemies. His people appear as volunteers in the day of His power, arrayed in the beauties of holiness and refreshed like dew from the womb of the morning. The same psalm depicts Him executing kings in the day of His wrath, judging among the nations, filling places with dead bodies, and striking the heads of many countries. As the Priest-King sworn into office according to the order of Melchizedek, He fulfills both royal and priestly roles without limitation, conquering every opposing power and establishing conditions for lasting peace and prosperity. This portrayal of rule is linked to His unchanging purpose of gathering and perfecting the saints, the excellent ones in whom He delights, so that they may share His inheritance and reign with Him as His bride in the Kingdom of God.
