You've Examined Yourself—Now What?

Article by Pat Higgins

Jesus Christ demonstrated the power of having God's Word in His heart by using it to counter temptation, as seen in His immediate responses to satan with Scripture already stored in His memory. He treated His Father's Word as the highest authority, replacing deceitful thoughts with divine truth, showing us the way to respond when tempted. If the sinless Son of God relied on His Father's Word to defeat temptation, we must follow His example to overcome our own struggles. Memorizing Scripture is essential because it equips us to measure our thoughts against God's truth, allowing His Word to guide our choices. As Psalm 37:31 states, when the law of God is in our heart, our steps will not slide. Deuteronomy 6:6 emphasizes this by commanding that God's words shall be in our heart, ensuring they are ready for recall when needed. Colossians 3:16 urges us to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly, shaping our minds to think as He does. The process of storing God's Word in our heart requires effort and purpose. We must identify our weaknesses, find specific verses that counter temptations, memorize them, and repeat them immediately when wrong thoughts arise. By making this a habit and turning to God for strength, we train ourselves to think according to His Word, preparing not only for Passover but for daily battles against temptation. Jesus Christ defeated satan by answering with His Father's Word, and we must do the same, choosing His way over our own to transform our thinking and actions.
