Christ enlarged the concept of success beyond individual physical prosperity to include group success through cooperation and sharing with others, as well as shifting the focus from physical to spiritual realities. He taught that personal success must be shared with and become a source of success for others, or it is not truly success, and that responsibility toward others includes the use of wealth in fulfillment of commands such as loving one's neighbor as oneself. This interdependence means that no one lives or dies to himself alone, but rather lives and dies to the Lord, so that whether living or dying, all belong to Him. In this light, Jesus challenged common conceptions of success and security through the parable of the rich fool. He warned against covetousness because laying up treasure for oneself while failing to be rich toward God leaves a person without true shelter or safety. Security is not found in the accumulation of things but in the triumph over them through wholehearted participation in God's way of life. True success is therefore the fruit of that participation rather than mere self-discipline or individual achievement. Life consists of an abundance of another sort, namely an abundance of the Spirit of the life of God. Jesus Himself, though rich, became poor for the sake of others so that through His poverty they might become rich, thereby paving the way for them to have life through God's grace and the opportunity to become truly rich.
