Does Doctrine Really Matter? (Part Six)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe survey taken at the United feast site in Branson, Missouri, revealed that Church of God members ranked conversion only as a secondary factor for a successful marriage. This response exposed a failure to grasp that spiritual beliefs shape relationships in major ways. The lack of conversion stands as the root of many marital problems because faith in God and conversion to His way of thinking supply the solution the world seeks without recognizing it. In the World Tomorrow the first order of business after initial warfare will be converting people to God's way of life so that competition and destruction do not recur. Conversion frees individuals from the fears, jealousies, and desires that dominate this present evil world and enables them to cooperate rather than compete. Many members nevertheless struggle to connect personal study, Sabbath sermons, and Bible studies to actual practice, revealing that they do not truly believe God means what He says. This same difficulty appears among ministers and lay members alike in the form of doctrinal blindness on plainly stated scriptures. The carnal mind's enmity against God, combined with human vanity, prevents submission to the simplicity of God's word, which is direct, frank, and free of double meanings. Examples include disputes over whether Passover occurs at the beginning or end of the fourteenth day and whether a wave sheaf offering occurred in Joshua 5 when Passover fell on a weekly Sabbath. These controversies arise from assumptions, convoluted word studies, and additions to or subtractions from clear instructions rather than from reliance on explicit statements such as Leviticus 23:5-6 and Deuteronomy 12:4-14. Such failures illustrate the ongoing need for conversion that produces wholehearted belief and obedience to what God has written.
Reconciliation and Unity
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughIt is foolish and pointless to use the same charm, social skills, and duplicity toward God as we use to deceive others and, sadly, even ourselves.
