Why Does God Keep Secrets?
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by David F. MaasIt is the glory of God to conceal a matter, as we read in Proverbs 25:2, highlighting His tendency to keep secrets, which has often caused frustration and bewilderment among countless individuals throughout history. God Almighty, by not revealing everything immediately and directly, employs state-of-the-art pedagogical techniques, using inductive inquiry and explorative methods to teach His creation. Scripture shows that certain things are kept back from His creation, purposed to be revealed incrementally and conditionally to His obedient chosen offspring. As Daniel 2:28 states, there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He discloses deep and secret things to those with understanding, as noted in Daniel 2:21-22. Knowledge of God's intents and purposes, His secrets, is conditional, linked unequivocally to submission and obedience to His holy law. God will only reveal Himself, making His purposes and intentions known, to those who yield to Him and actively seek Him, as Paul suggested to the philosophers of Athens, emphasizing the effort required in finding God. Even with the help of God's Holy Spirit, He requires an explorative, searching, investigative approach, with the Spirit given to those who obey Him, as mentioned in Acts 5:32. The Bible, described as a coded book or jigsaw puzzle, has God Almighty revealing the schematic diagram incrementally through His Holy Spirit, demanding readers to look for parallels, recurring patterns, and symbol clusters to uncover His hidden truths. Jesus Christ, our future Bridegroom, incorporated this coded feature into His parables, sharing the deeper meanings privately with His disciples while withholding them from the uninitiated, as seen in Matthew 13:11-13. God Almighty stores up sound wisdom for the upright, as assured in Proverbs 2:7, and those who diligently search for wisdom will find it, according to Proverbs 8. The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant, as stated in Psalm 25:14, indicating an intimate level of revelation reserved for the faithful. Our Fiancée, Jesus Christ, desires to share His innermost thoughts with us as His future bride, not wanting to keep secrets from us once we are united, but He calls us to ensure we are not holding back parts of ourselves or maintaining ties to past spiritual affiliations.
No More Secrets
Commentary by Ryan McClureIn this digital age, the concept of secrets and keeping them has become increasingly complex. With the rise of cyber warfare and hacking, personal information such as Social Security Numbers, dates of birth, and credit card details are at risk of being stolen and exploited for fraud or sold to the highest bidder. Companies worldwide invest billions in protecting data, yet breaches like those at Target in 2013 and Equifax in 2017 reveal the vulnerability of our information. As individuals, we often sacrifice privacy for the convenience of free online services, unaware that we become the product, with every click and post tracked by cookies and digital assistants like Alexa and Siri. Our personal tracking devices, our phones, capture and share our lives through social media, building detailed digital profiles that companies store and potentially use against us. The reality of living under digital surveillance means that nothing remains hidden, as every aspect of our existence is mined and profiled, available to advertisers and data brokers. As Luke 8:16-17 reminds us, nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not come to light. Similarly, Hebrews 4:13 affirms that all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. While God's knowledge of us is for our shaping into His image, the question remains whether the freedom to express ourselves online is truly free, or if it comes at a hidden cost when our data is wielded by unseen forces.
