Psalm 133

Sermon/Bible Study by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

True unity comes from God via His Holy Spirit and requires humbly submitting to God's terms rather than our own agendas.

The Priesthood of God (Part Four)

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

In the context of the priesthood, the care of physical appearance, including beards, was significant as a reflection of God's holiness. Priests were instructed to avoid imitating pagan practices in their grooming, ensuring that their facial hair and overall look did not resemble those of surrounding cultures. This was part of a broader set of standards to maintain a high measure of holiness, distinguishing them as representatives of a holy God. Their appearance had to align with the purity and separation that God embodies, avoiding any defacement or practices that would mar the image of perfection He desires in those who serve Him.

Modesty (Part One): Moderation and Propriety

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Martin G. Collins

In the discussion of modesty and dress as part of God's way of life, the topic of beards emerges as a specific aspect of personal appearance among other elements of attire. Beards, like clothing, are considered within the context of moderation and propriety, reflecting the inner character and attitude toward God's standards of righteousness. Just as clothing should cover the body appropriately and avoid excess or sensuality, the grooming of beards must align with the principles of modesty and self-control. The emphasis is on ensuring that personal appearance, including the wearing of beards, does not draw undue attention or become a display of pride, but rather serves as an expression of humility and decency in accordance with God's design for His people.

Is It Wrong to Shave or Cut One's Hair (Leviticus 19:27; 21:5)?

Bible Questions & Answers

You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard, as stated in Leviticus 19:27. Likewise, Leviticus 21:5 instructs that they shall not make any bald place on their heads, nor shall they shave the edges of their beards, nor make any cuttings in their flesh. This prohibition targets a specific kind of shaving or hair cutting that was a ritual custom among the heathen, who trimmed their beards and hair into special shapes to honor pagan deities. For instance, the ancient Egyptians cropped their hair short or shaved it to form a circular crown, and dressed their beards in a square form to honor the sun god Ra. Shaving one's beard or cutting one's hair for normal grooming, however, is entirely different and not condemned in the Scriptures.
