Quarantine Principles (2002)

Sermonette by Martin G. Collins

The principles of quarantine extend beyond physical diseases to encompass spiritual purity among God's people. Just as physical illnesses were isolated to prevent contamination, spiritual impurities such as heresy and false doctrine must be guarded against to maintain purity of mind and body. Sin separates us from God, and allowing infectious ideas to remain in our minds can cause spiritual illness. As defiling diseases destroy physical lives, those who spread false doctrine destroy spiritual lives and should be spiritually quarantined by being removed from fellowship. In Numbers 5:1-3, the LORD commanded Moses to put out of the camp every leper, every carrier of an infectious illness, and everyone defiled by a corpse, ensuring they do not defile the camp where He dwells. This physical separation represents the need for spiritual quarantine, emphasizing that impurity, whether physical or spiritual, cannot remain among God's people. Similarly, in Romans 16:17-20, believers are urged to note those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to learned doctrine and to avoid them. Such individuals, driven by selfish desires, deceive with smooth words and flattering speech, necessitating a spiritual quarantine to protect the simple from deception. By avoiding familiarity with evil and quarantining it, we remain wise in what is good and simple concerning evil, trusting that the God of peace will prevail.
