You've Examined Yourself—Now What?
Article by Pat HigginsMemorizing Scripture is a vital practice for overcoming temptation and aligning our thoughts with God's will. Jesus Christ demonstrated this by using the Word stored in His memory to counter Satan's deceit with God's truth, showing us the way to respond when tempted. If the sinless Son of God relied on His Father's Word to defeat temptation, we must follow His example to achieve victory. The process of memorization works by bringing specific verses to mind to address personal weaknesses, reminding us of God's authority and requirements. When a verse is recalled and seriously considered, it forces a choice between obedience and disobedience, revealing the true intent of our hearts. However, simply memorizing Scripture is not enough; we must actively use it as a weapon against temptation. Failing to apply the stored Word opens the door to excuses and rebellion, as we may push God's truth aside to avoid the hard choices obedience demands. Developing the mind of Christ requires filling our minds with God's Word through memorization, allowing us to measure our thoughts against His truth. As Colossians 3:16 urges, we must let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly, guiding our thinking and choices. Deuteronomy 6:6 emphasizes that God's commands should be in our hearts, a clear call to memorize His laws. By following Christ's example—identifying a fault, finding a countering verse, memorizing it, and using it immediately when tempted—we train ourselves to think according to God's Word and respond naturally to challenges. This practice of memorizing and applying Scripture is not limited to Passover preparation but is essential for daily battles against temptation. Satan seeks every opportunity to weaken our trust in God, targeting our vulnerabilities. If we do not strengthen these weak points with God's Word, we remain unprepared for his attacks. Storing and using God's Word equips us to choose Christ's way over our own, preparing us for every day as we strive to obey Him fully.
