'Have You Considered My Servant [Insert Name]'

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Ted E. Bowling

Job's story offers profound lessons about suffering, endurance, and the sovereignty of God. Job was a blameless, upright man who feared God, and God Himself testified to Job's character before Satan. When Satan appeared before God, having roamed the earth seeking whom he might devour, God initiated a conversation that would set the stage for one of history's greatest tests of faith. Satan argued that Job's faithfulness was conditional, that he served God only because of the blessings and protection he received. God allowed Satan to test Job within strict limits, first removing his wealth and family, then afflicting his body, yet never permitting Satan to take his life. Through all of this, Job's response was remarkable: "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord." Satan was proven wrong. A key insight is that the book of Job is fundamentally about God's sovereignty. Satan's role is actually minor, disappearing entirely after chapter two. Everything that happened to Job passed through God's hand, within boundaries God established. This same protection surrounds every believer today. God sets the limits on what Satan can do, and He permits only what He knows His servants can bear. Inserting one's own name in place of Job's transforms the story. God knows each person's walk, values, weaknesses, and faithfulness. When trials come, they are not proof of abandonment but evidence that God trusts His servant. Just as Jesus prayed for Peter rather than shielding him from his trial, Christ intercedes for believers today, pleading their case in heaven's courts. Satan cannot act without God's express permission. When he does act, God uses his malicious intentions to build endurance, character, and hope in His people. Every trial is part of a larger spiritual battle, one that believers do not fight alone. Ephesians 6 reminds us to put on
