Christ Our Wisdom
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsIn the pursuit of wisdom, Jesus Christ stands as the embodiment and source of divine understanding. God made Christ our Wisdom, demonstrating through His example and teaching the power and wisdom of God the Father. As a boy, the human Jesus grew in wisdom, astonishing audiences with His insight as a man, becoming the epitome of true wisdom for humanity. In His ministry, He personifies wisdom, showing that the wise—those who understand—approve of and do justice to His conduct and that of John. Christ is called the Word of God, for He is the spokesman through whom God makes His will known. He is named the Wisdom of God, as through Him, God reveals His wisdom in creation and salvation. Paul emphasizes Christ as the power and wisdom of God, a wisdom that embraces righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. When Christ came the first time, He brought wisdom to His Church, and upon His return, He will bring wisdom to the world. As the slain yet exalted Lord of the Church, He is praised for His wisdom, an attribute He shares with God the Father, imparted to us through Him and the Holy Spirit. If we desire to live wisely, we must follow the example and testimony of Jesus Christ. He is our source of wisdom, making us wise through His activity, teachings, and work. Through His instructions, we learn the true character of God, His law, and the hope of eternal life—truths unattainable by human philosophy but revealed through Christ. All treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Him, a spiritual mine accessible through prayer, Bible study, and teaching, yet hidden from those without spiritual eyes. Christ communicates wisdom in three primary ways: through His ministry, He instructs us in the true knowledge of God and salvation; by His word and Spirit, He reveals our true situation, turning us from folly to the path of wisdom; and as the source of wisdom to His called and chosen, He enlightens us in confusion, guides us in His way of life, and leads us to truth. Even those ignorant of worldly wisdom, when taught in the school of Christ, possess more true understanding of lasting importance than all the schools of philosophy can offer. Thus, we are thankful that Jesus Christ became for us wisdom from God, a wonderful, valuable, and essential gift to be valued, sought, and used in humility and obedience.
