Psalm Genres (Part Seven): Trust
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughFaith rests on evidence even though it transcends the five senses and the scientific method of physical proof. According to Hebrews 11:1, faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. The things of faith become known through revelation rather than through observable demonstration, so that faith itself functions as the groundwork and foundation for belief in God and in His Word. God stands at the base of this faith by making His invisible attributes and purposes known in many ways and at many times, opening the mind through the Holy Spirit to realities that cannot be seen or heard. Although faith does not depend on physical evidence, creation itself provides visible support for belief, as Romans 1 indicates that the natural world clearly reveals God's invisible attributes and leads to the conviction that He exists as Creator and Designer. This conviction extends to the understanding that God is reproducing Himself and desires a covenant relationship with those He has made in His image. Within that relationship faith operates as a two-way reality: believers trust God to keep His promises of help, protection, healing, and salvation, while God proves faithful to those who obey the terms of the covenant. The resulting trust becomes the basis of spiritual confidence, allowing believers to rely on God's proven faithfulness even when circumstances remain unseen.
