Religion in Politics
CGG Weekly by Richard T. RitenbaughIn an era of mounting secularism, religion has become an integral part of the election debate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Despite their claims of piety, candidates like Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney are not necessarily harbingers of American revival. Both are seen as moderates at best, with policies and past actions that do not fully align with conservative values, despite their religious rhetoric. True Christians should remain cautious of this trend of including religion in politics, recognizing that these men are vying for the highest office in the land, which holds the most political power in the world. They may say or do anything to make themselves more electable, often playing the religion card to gain the voting power of the Religious Right. This tactic is an old ploy, using religion to attain temporal power, reminiscent of historical patterns where religion and politics mix poorly, often leading to corruption through delusions of power. Americans should discern the difference between a religious person and a righteous one, especially when so much is at stake.
