Is Church Attendance Required in the Bible?
Bible Questions & AnswersIn the practice of the early followers of Jesus Christ, assembling together was a vital custom, as seen in the regular attendance of Sabbath services at the Temple in Jerusalem or synagogues by Him and His apostles. As the first century progressed, the early church members found themselves unwelcome in synagogues and thus began meeting for Sabbath worship and other gatherings in alternative locations such as homes, rented rooms, and outdoor settings. More significant than the physical location was their understanding of the essential need to meet and fellowship regularly with fellow believers in Christian unity. God, through the epistle to the Hebrews, commands Christians not to forsake assembling together, emphasizing the importance of this practice, particularly on the Sabbath when work is forbidden. Furthermore, in Leviticus 23:3, God commands a sacred assembly on the Sabbath, referring to it as a holy convocation, which means to speak together, for instruction and fellowship with other believers. Thus, the requirement to attend worship services on the Sabbath is clear whenever it is physically possible.
